Valentine Sucker

Do you remember being excited as a little kid about getting and giving Valentine cards at school? I do! I remember one year, I think 3rd grade, I chose Star Wars Valentine cards to give out to my class. I thought they were the coolest, most awesome cards in the world. I even went so far as to write personalized notes for each of my classmates. When it came time to pass out cards most of the class could care less about my cards. I learned a few lessons that year. First of all, I was not as cool as I thought I was. Second, most 3rd grade girls don’t like Star Wars at all. Finally, everyone would rather have a card with a sucker attached. George Lucas was a marketing genius, he made millions because of the Star Wars franchise but in 3rd grade, Luke Skywalker is no match for a sucker.

So, by now I am sure you are asking what does this have to do with anything? Well, God gave us much more than a card with a little note, He gave us the Bible. It repeatedly tells of His love for us. As we celebrate Valentine’s Day, a day set aside for love, I am so thankful for the greatest love ever displayed. You see, God loved us so much, that He sent His Son to die in our place, for our sin. John 3:16 sums it up so well, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (KJV). Don’t let the world deceive you with something that seems sweet but in reality, just leaves a sticky mess like a sucker. If you want to know more about how much God loves you, join us this Friday for Friday Night Fire 7 pm at Open Door Baptist Church.
